Black HIstory: A Photo Can Speak a Bajillion Words #16.

Glamour Magazine: October 1967
Daphne Reid
Lush. Mesmerizing. Alluring. Sensuous. Keen.

Any editor would've been a fool to disregard such a breathtaking smile. Such youthful energy and timeless face. Those everlasting arrays of Fresh Prince fans may only know Daphne Reid as "the 2nd Aunt Viv", but to the wonderful world of timeless fashion she is remembered as far more then any replacement. This photograph could never make me frown in dismay, even or my darkest day.
Yet, as the first African-American woman on the cover of the usual white-washed Glamour magazine, Daphne owns this achievement with the confidence to not only represent black women, but also represent glamorous woman of all races across the US. The timing of this Glamour issue also inter-knits with another historic win for Daphne. In the previous year she was victoriously crowned as the first African-American Homecoming Queen at Northwestern University, her college Alma mater where she received a degree in interior design and architecture. Aside from being a talented actress, Daphne also released several successful pattern lines through the popular company McCall's.(I remember one of my aunts collecting hundreds of these when I was a kid.)

Today: Daphne lives in Virgina state with husband, actor, producer, and writer Tim Reid(The dad on the sitcom Sister Sister). She also serves on the Board of Visitors at Virginia State University and owns and operates New Millennium Studios out of Petersburg, Virginia. Charming, multi-talented and creative, Daphne Reid's photo has always and will always speak a bajillion words.

Happy Black History Month!

TRIUMPH
